Hip-Hop and the Recession
Hip –Hop is a musical art form, it is now being displayed via internet where you can listen to it, view blogs, audio, video, pictures and read about it online.
The sounds of hip –hop arrived in the late 1960s early 1070s. Every so often a new style of music emerges that takes America by storm and comes to represent the generation that grows up with it. This essay will focus on its beginnings, where it is headed and has it been affected by the recession.
Hip-Hop: Its conception came from a young generation of African-Americans in the Bronx, who created a beautiful, prideful expression of music, art and dance from a backdrop of poverty. Since its arrival in a New York City Borough, it has inspired people from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds all across the world. When hip-Hop is discussed as an art form and not just as rap, it usually is meant to include the elements of the Dj, Emcee, music and dancing. Some of these were around before the words hip-hop, but they reestablished their identities within hip-hop.
Although Hip-hop has survived the 70s, 80s, 90s, here in 2009, has it been affected by the recession? Surprisingly No! Hip-hop will survive the recession due to peoples love for music. People have been downloading music from the internet for years. Hip-Hop sales are down because record labels haven’t put out any records. Big name artist like Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Kanye West just to name a few all being affected by the downloading, but it’s not caused by the recession. The music industry seems to be standing strong despite the downloading and people availability to pay for the high priced Cd. Hip-Hop listeners despite the failing economy still find a way to purchase a Cd from their favorite artist. If they can’t purchase the high dollar Cd they can always make a copy or download or even by it from a bootlegger. This is where sales decline for record labels. All the downloads from bootleggers, record labels lose money form their product which is being spread all over by people who are bootlegging it.
Many record labels have a strong argument about people bootlegging their product. It seems their argument is that their product which is the Cd is being cheapen and their losing money in a major way.
Some artists who drape themselves in jewelry and diamonds have been forced to buy imitation jewelry due to the recession. Their spending power isn’t the same as it was before. Although they have money, it isn’t the same kind of money they were earning before the recession. Hip-Hop artist have even started to taunt each other over the fake jewelry trend as artist turn to cheaper medals or fake reproductions. Some rappers are being affected by the on-going recession as they try to find a better to survive it.
The chain go’s down from the CEO to the manager on down to the artist. The artist is the employee who seems to make the least after the CEO and the manager. Not only does the artist get paid the least they get paid last after marketing, photography shoots, bling and their high dollar clothes. All things that make the artist who they are have to be paid first. So the artist is not only losing money on a national level their losing money locally as consumers seem to save their money by downloading or burning Cds to hear their favorite artist song through headphones, i-pods, or the Cd player in their car.
The artist is forced to sell his Cds by traveling and selling them by himself through any avenue of commerce, or by partnering with a local store in a different state to issue the Cd under the table as the artist get his money without the Ceo or manager finding out.
